Golfer Fred Couples Aids in Fight Against Mesothelioma

Six-time Champions Tour winner and 15-time PGA Tour winner Fred Couples recently donated $25,000 to the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation (Meso Foundation). Couples’ gift was to honor the memory of George Elo, who died after suffering from mesothelioma. Among the other significant donors to the foundation was the law firm of The Gori Law Firm, which regularly donates to the foundation.

The Meso Foundation’s mission is to eradicate mesothelioma as a fatal cancer. It carries out its mission by funding peer-reviewed research to find effective treatments for the disease, having funded more than $7.6 million to date. In addition to the funding it provides, the Meso Foundation makes medical referrals and provides information about the latest treatments and clinical trials for patients suffering from mesothelioma.

About Mesothelioma

Although mesothelioma can be caused by other sources, the vast majority of mesothelioma cases are caused by asbestos exposure. Asbestos was a material that was used in abundance during the 20 th century in the following industries, among others:

  • Construction
  • Auto repair
  • Ship building
  • Military
  • Railroad
  • Manufacturing
  • Textiles

Employees who worked in these industries during this time had a high risk of being exposed to asbestos.

If asbestos fibers or dust is inhaled, the particles can become imbedded in the lungs. Over time, these foreign particles can cause severe inflammation that leads to abnormal cell growth and division in the mesothelium, or lining of internal organs, within 20 to 40 years after exposure.

As time progresses, the cancer slowly spreads throughout the mesothelium and beyond, causing the lungs to accumulate fluid. This causes the person afflicted to experience symptoms such as shortness of breath, coughing, chest pains, weight loss and abdominal pain. Once diagnosed, about 80 percent of patients die within two years.

An Attorney Can Help

The deleterious effects of asbestos exposure are generally permanent and irreversible. Victims of mesothelioma who can prove that they were exposed to asbestos may be able to recover damages to compensate them for such expenses as medical expenses, lost wages and past and future pain and suffering.

If you have been diagnosed with mesothelioma and suspect that you were exposed to asbestos, contact an attorney experienced with mesothelioma cases. An attorney can investigate the circumstances surrounding your diagnosis, advise you of your rights and pursue all due compensation on your behalf.
