The U.S. Coast Guard Ship Aurora was built in 1931, when asbestos was commonly used throughout ships. Decommissioned in 1968, many who served or worked on her now suffer from mesothelioma.

Patrol ships are small and fast which makes them the idea ship to run non-hostile missions to maintain a peaceful maritime landscape and alert more war-ready vessels of impending danger. Patrol ships were quite useful during World War II, they saved thousands of lives by scouting ahead of the allies’ war fleet. Unfortunately, while crewmembers of patrol vessels were scouting for danger from enemy ships, they were being exposed to danger in their own ship. These men were exposed to asbestos from boilers, piping, and ventilation systems.
