USS Arethusa (IX 135) – Navy Tanker

Classification: Tanker

Status: Disposed of by Scrapping

Fleet: Pacific

Launch Date: 1921
Commission Date: 3/23/1944
Decommission Date: 5/16/1946

The USS Arethusa earned two battle stars for her service in the Pacific during World War II.

A tanker is a large vessel that is designed to carry bulk liquids, such as fuel or water, to other ships in the fleet while they are underway. Sometimes, they even carried other small vessels in addition to oil, chemicals, and other liquids. The tankers that served during World War II generally weighed several hundred tons and were around 530 feet in length. These vessels tend to move slower, and as such were common targets of German U-Boats during the Second World War. Crewmembers that sailed aboard tankers brought essential goods to their fellow Navy vessels, all the while being exposed to Asbestos.

Anyone who served on a tanker should speak with their doctor regarding asbestos related diseases such as Mesothelioma and Lung Cancer, and the treatment options available.
