Throughout the Second World War, the USS Cambria served in the Pacific, taking part in the invasions of the Marshall Islands and Okinawa. The USS Cambria received six battle stars for her service in World War II. After the war, she landed troops at Gaza during the Suez Crisis, and was also involved in the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962.
Transport ships were designed to ferry cargo between locations and to provide repair services to damaged vessels. These ships served a similar purpose as cargo ships and tankers. Unfortunately men on attack transports were exposed to asbestos while aboard these vessels. Asbestos was found in a number of areas on these ships, in particular the insulation that lined piping.
Anyone who served on an attack transport should speak with their doctor regarding asbestos related diseases, such as Mesothelioma and Lung Cancer, and the treatment options available.
