During World War II, USS Frederick Funston transported troops and supplies to the Mediterranean and the Pacific. While in the Mediterranean, she landed men successfully through heavy surf in Sicily and Salerno, Italy, and Northern Ireland. In the Pacific, she embarked Marines for the invasion of Saipan, and after a week off the beaches offloading cargo and taking casualties on board, she returned to Honolulu. She departed again for the Western Pacific, landing troops in Leyte, Luzon, and Iwo Jima. For her service in World War II, she received six battle stars, and for her service in Korea she received one battle star.
Transport ships were designed to ferry cargo between locations and to provide repair services to damaged vessels. These ships served a similar purpose as cargo ships and tankers. Unfortunately men on attack transports were exposed to asbestos while aboard these vessels. Asbestos was found in a number of areas on these ships, in particular the insulation that lined piping.
Anyone who served on an attack transport should speak with their doctor regarding asbestos related diseases, such as Mesothelioma and Lung Cancer, and the treatment options available.
