Repair ships are the single most important reason that other ships in the fleet are able to continue operating. Repair ships rendezvous with damaged vessels at sea and perform on site repairs, which allow the damaged ship to continue its cruise without stopping at a naval shipyard for repairs. Quite frequently, repair vessels were able to keep other ships afloat and save thousands of lives in the process. Unfortunately, while crewmembers of repair vessels were fixing other ships, they were being exposed to asbestos from boilers, piping, and ventilation systems.
Anyone who served on a repair ship should speak with their doctor regarding asbestos related diseases, such as Mesothelioma and Lung Cancer, and the treatment options available.
