USS Kula Gulf (CVE 108) – Navy Escort Carrier

Classification: Escort Carrier

Status: disposed of by dismantling, scrapping

Fleet: 7th

Launch Date: 8/15/1944
Commission Date: 5/12/1945
Decommission Date: 10/6/1969

The USS Kula Gulf participated in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam.

Escort Carriers are war ships that are structured to deploy and recover aircraft. They are essentially traveling airbases. Typically they are half the length of aircraft carriers, carry fewer planes, are slower, and they are cheaper to build and maintain than aircraft carriers, which is the advantage. Escort carries lack the fire power of other types of ships and are usually accompanied by several other ships in the fleet for protection. Several were sunk which resulted in major loss of life. Unfortunately, while serving their country, these men were exposed to asbestos while on board escort carriers. Asbestos was found in a number of areas on these ships, in particular the insulation that lined piping aboard these vessels.

Anyone who served on an escort carrier should speak with their doctor regarding asbestos related diseases, such as Mesothelioma and Lung Cancer, and the treatment options available.
