Throughout World War II, the USS Latimer transported cargo shuttled troops between the United States and the Western Pacific. During the Korean war, she participated in a series of amphibious exercises and troop lifts. After that, she took part in training cruises or engaged in amphibious landing training.
Transport ships were designed to ferry cargo between locations and to provide repair services to damaged vessels. These ships served a similar purpose as cargo ships and tankers. Unfortunately men on attack transports were exposed to asbestos while aboard these vessels. Asbestos was found in a number of areas on these ships, in particular the insulation that lined piping.
Anyone who served on an attack transport should speak with their doctor regarding asbestos related diseases, such as Mesothelioma and Lung Cancer, and the treatment options available.
