USS Menard assisted in the invasion of Okinawa by offloading support cargo and troops. After the hostilities of World War II, she shuttled troops back and forth from the Western Pacific. During the Korean war, the USS Menard supported the movement of men and supplies to Korea. She received one battle star for her service during World War II and three battle stars for their service during the Korean War.
Transport ships were designed to ferry cargo between locations and to provide repair services to damaged vessels. These ships served a similar purpose as cargo ships and tankers. Unfortunately men on attack transports were exposed to asbestos while aboard these vessels. Asbestos was found in a number of areas on these ships, in particular the insulation that lined piping.
Anyone who served on an attack transport should speak with their doctor regarding asbestos related diseases, such as Mesothelioma and Lung Cancer, and the treatment options available.
