Cargo ships were specifically designed to carry troops, heavy equipment, and supplied in support of amphibious assaults and to provide gunfire during those assaults. Amphibious Cargo Ships could carry landing craft as well, and their holds were optimized for combat loading. Unfortunately men on attack transports were exposed to asbestos while aboard these vessels. Asbestos was found in a number of areas on these ships, in particular the insulation that lined piping.
Anyone who served on cargo ship should speak with their doctor regarding asbestos related diseases, such as Mesothelioma and Lung Cancer, and the treatment options available.
