Built in 1953 by the New York shipbuilding Corp., the USS Paul Revere saw action in the Vietnam war. Many veterans who served on her were exposed to asbestos dust.

The USS Paul Revere spent her early career participating in a series of amphibious training exercises and operations. In 1962, in a time span of six minutes, she rescued three crewmen of a helicopter that crashed into the ocean several hundred yards away from the ship. During the Vietnam War, she saw action in North Vietnam as her crew destroyed communications and saved a group of Marines from the Viet Cong. She was awarded the Meritorious Unit Commendation, the first ship of her type to receive this award.
Transport ships were designed to ferry cargo between locations and to provide repair services to damaged vessels. These ships served a similar purpose as cargo ships and tankers. Unfortunately men on attack transports were exposed to asbestos while aboard these vessels. Asbestos was found in a number of areas on these ships, in particular the insulation that lined piping.
