Command ships were typically the flagship for the Commander of the Fleet and were used to provide communications, office space, and accommodations for the Commander of the Fleet and his staff in order to coordinate fleet activities. The men on these ships organized missions and made decisions that directly affected the men in the fleet. While they made decisions that put the troops in danger, a danger they faced, unknowingly, was Asbestos. Asbestos was found in a number of areas on these ships, in particular the insulation that lined piping.
Anyone who served on a command ship should speak with their doctor regarding asbestos related diseases, such as Mesothelioma and Lung Cancer, and the treatment options available.
