Classification: Guided Missile Frigate

Early in her career, USS Talbot conducted firing exercises and antisubmarine operations off the coast of Virginia. She participated in the search for a missing nuclear submarine briefly before joining the 6 th Fleet in the Mediterranean for two deployments. She then spent some time in the Bahamas and circumnavigating South America on joint exercises with ships from seven other Navies. Her next tour was to the Western Atlantic where she completed fleet tactic exercises. After that, she sailed to the Mediterranean again, and also spent some time in the Caribbean and the Persian Gulf.

Frigates are among the United States Navy’s most historic vessels and have been since the Revolutionary War. Modern frigates are among the most advanced battleships and integral to naval victories. They are used to protect other war ships however they posses less offensive fire power and speed than destroyers. This isn’t a problem for frigates, because they are mainly used for anti-submarine warfare and submarines are typically slower moving vessels. Although frigates proved useful to our fleet, unfortunately, men on frigates were exposed to asbestos while aboard these vessels. Asbestos was found in a number of areas on these ships, in particular the insulation that lined piping.

Anyone who served on frigates should speak with their doctor regarding asbestos related diseases, such as Mesothelioma and Lung Cancer, and the treatment options available.
