USS William J Pattison
A Rudderow-class destroyer escort, the USS William J. Pattison was constructed in 1944 by Bethlehem-Hingham Shipyard. They used asbestos as an insulator throughout the ship.
USS William J Pattison (APD 104) (ex-DE 594) – Navy High Speed Transport
Classification: High Speed Transport
Status: Disposed of by Scrapping, Dismantling
Fleet: 3rd
Launch Date: 2/15/1944
Commission Date: 12/27/1944
Decommission Date: 3/1946
The USS William A Pattison embarked troops in Pearl Harbor and headed for the Marshall Islands. While in the Western Pacific, she transported troops to different ports such as Okinawa, the Philippines, and the Ulithi Atoll. After the cessation of hostilities in Japan, she began her part in the occupation by demilitarizing captured Japanese warships.
Transport ships were designed to ferry cargo between locations and to provide repair services to damaged vessels. These ships served a similar purpose as cargo ships and tankers. Unfortunately men on high speed transports were exposed to asbestos while aboard these vessels. Asbestos was found in a number of areas on these ships, in particular the insulation that lined piping.
Anyone who served on a high speed transport should speak with their doctor regarding asbestos related diseases, such as Mesothelioma and Lung Cancer, and the treatment options available.
