Tugs are vessels that are used to tow or maneuver larger vessels while in harbors, open water, or slight passages. These ships are small, but have amazing strength. During World War II, tugs were used to transport disabled vessels and to pilot large ships through narrow canals. Unfortunately, while assisting other ships in the fleet, men on tugs were exposed to asbestos while aboard these vessels. Asbestos was found in a number of areas on these ships, in particular the insulation that lined piping.
Anyone who served on a harbor tug should speak with their doctor regarding asbestos related diseases, such as Mesothelioma and Lung Cancer, and the treatment options available.
