Throughout World War II, the USS Botetourt transported cargo and disembarked troops in Japan and shuttled troops between Korea and Japan. During the Korean war, she participated in a series of amphibious exercises and troop lifts. She made one cruise to the Mediterranean making stops in France, Greece, Italy, and Algeria. After that, her assignments consisted of landing exercise after landing exercise.
Transport ships were designed to ferry cargo between locations and to provide repair services to damaged vessels. These ships served a similar purpose as cargo ships and tankers. Unfortunately men on attack transports were exposed to asbestos while aboard these vessels. Asbestos was found in a number of areas on these ships, in particular the insulation that lined piping.
Anyone who served on an attack transport should speak with their doctor regarding asbestos related diseases, such as Mesothelioma and Lung Cancer, and the treatment options available.
