The USS Hamul began her service to the United States Navy as a cargo ship. She was converted to a destroyer tender in 1943 and was tasked with removing demolition charges from the U-505, which was the first German submarine captured on the high seas by the US Navy since 1815. After that, she sailed for the Pacific to help repair battle-damaged ships in Okinawa. The USS Hamul earned one battle star for her service during World War II. After the war she was stationed in England making routine trips to the Mediterranean. She was called for service in the Korean War earning one battle star for her service.
Destroyer Tenders main purpose was to provide maintenance and support of destroyers and other small warships in the fleet. However, these ships are not as necessary as they used to be due to technological advances and automization of modern ships. Unfortunately men on destroyer tenders were exposed to asbestos while aboard these vessels. Asbestos was found in a number of areas on these ships, in particular the insulation that lined piping.
Anyone who served on a destroyer tender should speak with their doctor regarding asbestos related diseases, such as Mesothelioma and Lung Cancer, and the treatment options available.
